Elon Musk, who has faced criticism for alleged antisemitic content on his social media platform, X, visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp on Monday. The visit to the Holocaust memorial site occurred ahead of Musk’s scheduled appearance at an antisemitism conference organized by the European Jewish Association in Krakow, Poland.
Accusations from the Anti-Defamation League and others claim that Musk, owner of the X platform (formerly Twitter), has allowed antisemitic messages since acquiring it in 2022. In November, Musk generated controversy with a response on X endorsing a user’s statement about Jews. He later apologized for the comment.
Major brands, including Disney and IBM, ceased advertising on X last year due to concerns about their ads appearing alongside extremist content. X subsequently filed a lawsuit against Media Matters, an advocacy group, alleging the intentional creation of a report to harm the platform’s reputation.
Elon Musk’s visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau was initially expected on Tuesday, coinciding with a memorial service. However, he attended the Nazi death camp on Monday, laying a wreath at the wall of death and participating in a brief memorial ceremony. The European Jewish Association noted Musk’s private visit, mentioning that it occurred before his appearance at their conference in Krakow.
Musk, along with Ben Shapiro, a Daily Wire podcaster, was set to discuss online antisemitism at the conference, which took place ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.
